5 Mantras For Busy People


Mantras can help improve the quality of life in different ways. Mantra Meditations are very powerful and have the ability to change your life for the better.

What are Mantras you may ask?

Mantras are words or syllables that, when chanted repeatedly, transform a person’s life. Mantras are energy-based sounds that, when recited, cause vibrational shifts through the body. Mantras originate from Indian doctrines that were formed by a group of people called the Vedics. These people used Mantras as part of their tradition. Over time, this led to the mantras being accepted worldwide. You can find mantras in all spiritual traditions including Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, Jainism, etc.

Mantra can be traced back to the power of words. God created the whole universe by using words. You, too, have the power to change your life with words.

There are three main types of mantras that are used for different purposes. They are Sattavic mantras, Rajasic mantras, and Tamasic mantras.

Tamasic mantras are used to hurt another person, to cut down real or perceived enemies. These mantras are usually used by selfish people with low self-esteem, who use them to destroy a business rival or to destroy a marriage. These types of mantras are equal to black magic.

Sattavic mantras are used for spiritual purposes, to enhance one’s spirituality and to have a deeper connection with the universe. They can uplift your spirit and amp up your faith.

Rajasic mantras are used for individual material goals. These are used to increase wealth and prosperity. They also increase success in other areas of life.

Within these 3 types of mantras there are 4 categories. They are upnishadic, vedic, tantric, and puranic.

Upnishadic mantras talk of the supreme truths of the gods. These allow a deeper connection to your god of choice. For example, the Gayatri mantra is offered to the goddess called Gayatri to invoke more light in ones life. Click here to listen to the Gayatri mantra.

Vedic mantras are the most sacred. They are normally chanted to praise a specific god or deity. They invoke the blessing of the god to whom you are chanting. For example, many people chant to the goddess Lakshmi for the blessing of abundance or the goddess Saraswati for help in educational or creative endeavors.

Tantric mantras are from Tranta Granthi. They only work if you have faith and belief in them. If you believe in the mantras, you can feel the effects immediately. You feel a vibrational change in your body. You either feel unusually cold or warm.

Puranic mantras function as daily prayers. They help cultivate positive thinking. They help you feel good about yourself and your standing in life. Puranic mantras are excellent for stress relief. They are best chanted in the morning when you get up, or in the evening before bed.

Within the 4 categories, they are divided into 2 main categories, which are saguna mantras and nirguna mantras.

Saguna mantras are used to invoke a god, goddess or deity.

Nirguna mantras don’t represent any god, goddess or object, they represent the world. The universe in its entirety. Examples of this are Om and So Ham. Om means “the God in all” and So ham means “I am that.”

When you chant Om or So ham, you are not restricted by anything and are connected to the universal tone.

A mantra that only has one syllable is called a mono mantra. “Om” is the most internationally recognized single-syllable mantra. This mantra has profound positive effects on people. This mantra represents God and all of creation. This mantra is used to bring order and peace to a person’s body. Use this mantra if you want or need to bring peace to your life.

A mantra that has many syllables is called a verse mantra. These are normally used to praise a god or deity. An example of this is the Gayatri Mantra. Click here to listen to my version of the Gayatri mantra.
Sound-based mantras are used to cause vibrations in the body. It’s a chant for the body’s wellbeing.

Thought-based mantras are used to influence thought. They can be used to stop negative thinking and self-destructive actions.

Meditation mantras are meant to cut down the mental chatter by keeping the mind silent and focused, and to promote concentration.

How to Perform A Mantra

The first step is to know the specific meaning of the mantra. You can’t effectively use a mantra if you don’t know what it means. There is one very popular school that assigns mantras to students without giving them the meaning. This is very careless, as the person chanting the mantra should be able to make a conscious decision to chant a mantra. Demand to be told and/or shown what a mantra means before you agree to chant it.

Mantras are best practiced when you first get up in the morning or at night right before bed. During these times, our brains are more receptive to the mantra vibrations. BUT, if you can’t do it during these times, pick a time to chant regularly. Just start chanting. There are some chants that can be chanted any time of the day and these are Japa and ilhikit-japa chants. Like any other discipline, the more you practice, the more the mantras will work for you. They have to be chanted frequently. You cannot chant just once and expect massive change. You have to reopen the circuits to raise your frequency.

  1. OM – Connecting to the God in all. The universal flow
  2. So Ham (rhymes with Mom) – I am that
  3. Ganesh Mantra – Om Gum ganapateyi Namaha- Ganesh is the remover of obstacles. We chant this to remove obstacles.
  4. Rama Mantra – Om Sri Rama Jaya Rama, jaya jaya rama- We chant this to remove negativity from our lives. It is said that Mahatma Gandhi chanted this for 60 years.
  5. Lakshmi mantra – Om Shrim Mahalakshimyei Namaha- This mantra is used to attract the right kinds of friends and to invoke prosperity in your life.
